Where to Mountain Bike in Truckee during the National Forest Closures

Due to the devastating wildfires and drought conditions in California, all of the National Forests in the Pacific Southwest region (ie the vast majority of the state) have been closed. This includes many of the mountain biking trails in the Truckee region, like Big Chief, Jackass, the Donner Lake Rim Trail, and many others.

However, there are still plenty of trails left to ride in the Truckee area while the National Forest closures remain in effect. This year the closures will end on September 17th, but I think that preemptive forest closures for fire safety will be a common thing that we’ll have to deal with in the late summer and fall.

Here are a few of my favorite Truckee trails that aren’t on National Forest land that you can still ride.

True Grit, Tahoe Donner

Rowton Peak, Royal Gorge

These trails are on Wašišiw Ɂítdeʔ (Washoe) land.

If you want to donate to the Caldor Fire relief fund, you can do that here. Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association will have a lot of work ahead of them restoring and rebuilding trails destroyed in the Caldor Fire. You can donate to them here.
